Acne Treatment for African American Skin

Treating acne with African American skin can be difficult due to the higher amounts of melanin in the skin. Melanin makes the skin more sensitive and improper acne treatment for African American skin can lead to scarring or dark spots for months.

African American skin may be both sensitive and oily, or dry, combination and normal. Treat your acne according to what kind of skin you have remembering that it can also be sensitive and you need to use gentler products. Usually the worst time of year for acne is in the winter since the air is dryer and can dry out your already sensitive skin. The skin can get irritated easier and break out more often. But by taking care to regularly clean the skin with products that are gentle you can get rid of acne and prevent it.

Home Acne Treatment for African American Skin

Having African American skin is different than having any other skin type despite what people may claim. The reason is that there is more melanin in African American skin which makes acne more frustrating. The melanin makes the acne appear darker, and even when the pimple is gone there can still be a dark spot for months afterward. But vitamin A has been proven to help heal the skin faster and reduce the dark spots that come with acne on African American skin.

• Since African American skin is usually sensitive, avoid harsh treatments that will further irritate your skin. To make a mask that will help to clean out the pores, moisten the face and be gentle a good sweet potato mask will help. Sweet potatoes are extremely high in vitamin A, which helps the skin heal faster. Mashing up some boiled sweet potatoes with a little bit of olive oil, tea tree oil or aloe vera will help your skin heal faster from acne.

• Take some aspirin and crush them into powder. Mix with a little bit of water or if you would like to moisturize your face at the same time use aloe vera, tea tree oil or olive oil to make a grainy paste. The paste can then be used to cleanse your face. Your face will heal faster, get rid of pimples quicker and prevent future zits.

Using products that have natural ingredients such as aloe vera are especially good for African American skin. If you can find products that have vitamin A which will help your skin heal faster. Avoid products that have high benzoyl peroxide concentration since it is very harsh on the skin, unless you are lucky and don’t have sensitive skin. Look for products that have salicylic acid which is a great cleanser and won’t irritate your skin.

Taking proper care of your skin will get rid of acne and prevent it from coming back. You will be able to have skin that glows and you can be comfortable in your beautiful healthy skin.
